LADIES TRIPLES REPORT

by Sue F (Ladies Triples Organiser)

Well, the results are in! The winning team of the ladies triples this year is none other than the Madcaps! A huge round of applause for Maureen D, Ellen D, Tricia B, Jayne W, Pat P, and Barbara S. They've been presented with the Millie Allen Shield and each of them also received a £10 Marks and Spencer gift token. What a great prize!

On the other end, the Southon Belles finished in last place, but they still got a sweet consolation prize— a bag of Jelly Babies each. The awards ceremony was followed by a wonderful cream tea. Delicious sandwiches, sausage rolls, and scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. Everyone had a lovely afternoon and we are all already looking forward to next year's tournament. There's even talk of extending the season so all the teams can play each other at least twice.

A big thank you to the ladies who prepared the delicious tea, and a special shout-out to Craig for his help with updating the results on BowlR each week. Congratulations again to the Madcaps!

Match Highlights

Last Bowl Triumph in County Mixed Pairs Quarter Finals

On Tuesday, July 29th, Shelley  and Jon  (stepping in for Paul) secured a dramatic last-bowl victory in the Sussex County Mixed Pairs Quarter Final against West Hoathly BC. Played at Worthing Pavilion in challenging conditions, our duo fought back from a 12-2 deficit on the 8th end to lead 18-13 by the 15th. With scores tied at 18-18 and light fading, Jon's masterful last shot, guided by Shelley, clinched the 19-18 win! This propels Shelley and Paul into the semi-finals on August 4th at Popes Mead against a team from Lindfield.

East Preston & Kingston Ladies vs. Southwick

Our Ladies faced a formidable challenge, Wednesday, July 24th, against highly skilled Southwick opposition in a home and away double rink match. It was a nail-biter! After our gallant lasses holding a lead early on, extending to 19-13 by the 10th end, Southwick mounted a significant comeback, taking the lead 28-20 by the 15th. Despite a valiant rally in the closing ends, Southwick ultimately secured the win 33-27. The narrow six-shot margin truly highlights the closeness of the match against strong opponents. Our Ladies can take immense pride in their performance!

CLEAR SECURES SUSSEX SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday, July 20, the Sussex County Bowls Men’s Singles Championship was held at Hampden Park, Eastbourne. The final featured Jon Clear of East Preston & Kingston BC and Martin Law of Preston BC with M. Cooperman marking.

The match required either player to reach 21 shots to win. The winner would receive the Towner Cup and the runner-up the Hollis Cup. Both players reached the final after their string of well-earned victories in the knock out stages of the competition.

The championship title decider began with Jon from East Preston getting off to a good start, winning the first end, but Martin from Preston quickly leveled the score in the second. Jon proceeded carefully, building a lead of 6-1 by the sixth end. Martin mounted a significant comeback, eventually taking a 12-7 lead by the 16th end.

Jon then held his nerve and staged his own impressive rally, scoring on eight consecutive ends to reach 20-12. Despite Jon being on the verge of victory, Martin fought back, scoring two points on the 25th end and three more on the 26th, bringing the score to a tense 20-17.

The 27th end was to be the last and the decider. With the travelling crowd in suspense, Jon delivered a precise bowl, looking to secure the single point he needed to win. Martin's final bowls just couldn't counter Jon's placement, leading to Jon Clear winning the championship 21-17. It was a close, thrilling and nail-biting finish.

Jon's victory was richly deserved, with both players demonstrating admirable skill and resilience throughout. Jon proudly lifted the impressive Towner Cup aloft, receiving a commemorative blazer flash and a pennant for his club East Preston & Kingston BC. Congratulations to both players for a memorable final.
